Geocache Description:

Burch's Mill Hythe,

The mill, powered by the diminutive Saltwood Stream (spring-fed), is on a mill site dating from before 1885, the present building being of 1773 with later additions. The machinery dates from Victorian times and the mill has seen many changes. It is unusual in having the stones on a mezzanine floor.
It stopped work on Saturday August 27th 1932 after grinding its last batch of oats, the remains of which were found in 1993 when overhauling the stones. The mill narrowly avoided destruction by bombing during the 1939/45 war.
It was purchased by the present owners in 1982, who firstly renovated the integral house as their home. The 1987 Storm severely damaged the mill and granary roofs which added to their problems. The dam was repaired to hold water again and with the wheel rebuilt and essential repairs completed, grinding restarted in December 1993.
The present overshot wheel, 21 x 5 feet wide with 72 wooden buckets, dates from 1880. It drove 3 pairs of stones on the hurst, with an additional pair lower down assisted by a Wentworth steam engine which is now missing, though its driving gear to the pit wheel remains. The sack hoist is restored but the other auxiliary equipment stands idle. If you dont sign the log book dont log it online.
