Geocache Description:

This cache will bring you to one of the gateways to Robertson Quay. Less hurried than Boat Quay and Clarke Quay, Robertson Quay has come into its own with a string of pleasant dining spots that have attracted their own following. Its more leisurely pace by the Singapore river presents a perfect environment to shoot the breeze.

Bars and restaurants sit side by side against a lofty backdrop of hotels and condominiums. Robertson Quay occupies 51 hectacres of the Singapore River planning area and is the largest of the three quays.

Alkaff Bridge (Singapore's ArtBridge) is a pedestrian bridge in Singapore. It spans the Singapore River at Robertson Quay, located in the Singapore River planning area within the Central Area, Singapore's Central Business District.

The steel truss bridge is 55 metres in length and weighs about 230 tonnes. It is shaped like a tongkang (a light boat used commonly in the early days to carry goods along rivers), and is situated near the former Alkaff Quay. Alkaff Quay was named after a prominent Arabian family, the Alkaffs, who were among the wealthiest in Singapore during the early 20th century.

The bridge was built in 1997, as part of the Urban Redevelopment Authority's (URA) plan to create a promenade along both banks of the Singapore River. The bridge, completed in 1999, is one of three footbridges — Alkaff Bridge, Robertson Bridge and Jiak Kim Bridge — built at Robertson Quay to improve the pedestrian connectivity between the two river banks.

The History of Robertson Quay

Robertson Quay was originally named after Dr. J Murray Robertson, a prominent Municipal Councillor. The upper reaches of the Singapore River were originally mud flats and swamps. As the result of the rapid growth in trade and population along the Singapore river, the area was reclaimed in the mid nineteenth century. Warehouses and boatyards were constructed in in the 1880's in both European and Chinese styles. The buildings were large and well ventilated. In the 1990's, the Urban Redevelopment Authority rezoned the area for new development of residential, hotel, and commercial use.
