Geocache Description:

Located on Long island on Astotin Lake in Elk Island National Park.
Cache must be reached via canoe or in the winter ski's/snowshoes. Use caution when finding this cache. Thin ice may be found on bodies of water in the park. Be prepared to self rescue.

Take a look at the trees on this island. Do they seem
different than the ones on the shore?
Astotin Lakes 21 islands have been un touched by fire
for well over a century. Fire is a key ecological process,
one that has been largely absent from Elk Island since
we became a park. Fire removes fuel (dead plant matter),
increases biodiversity, reduces aspen encroachment into
grasslands and increases plant species diversity. In fact
some plant species need fire to regenerate! Elk Island has
a fire management plan that guides our use of prescribed
(planned) burns to maintain the health of the landscape.
The spruce trees you see on Astotin Lake’s islands
represent the final stage of a forest’s lifecycle.
