Geocache Description:

Located on the east fence of Elk Island National Park just of township road 534. Located in the trees next to the fence.

When ‘Elk Park’ was created in 1906 it became
Canada’s first game preserve.
It is also the only fully fenced national park in Canada.
Take a look around you. On one side of you is Elk
Island’s fence- on the other farm land. To ensure the
health of Elk Island’s bison, fences are maintained to
keep them from interacting with local cattle. The fence
also keeps bison and moose from destroying crops!
Elk Island maintains over 100 km of fences.
Please remember that access to the rest of the park
requires the purchase of a park pass. Passes can be
purchased from staff at any gate, at the Visitor Centre
or by using the automatic payment system.

Quand le parc Elk Park a été créé en 1906, il s’agissait de la première réserve de chasse au Canada. C’est aussi le seul parc national entièrement clôturé au pays.

Regardez autour de vous. D’un côté, il y a la clôture du parc; de l’autre, les terres agricoles. La clôture empêche les bisons d’être en contact avec le bétail des fermes environnantes, ce qui contribue à les garder en santé. Elle empêche également les bisons et les orignaux de détruire les cultures.

Le parc maintient en état plus d’une centaine de kilomètres de clôture.
