Geocache Description:

Just a short hike from the parking lot of Mahukona State Beach Park on the Kohala Coast. The "lighthouse" is actually a US Coast Guard navigational beacon, but a local landmark nonetheless.

Technically this is not a beach but an abandoned harbor, once the terminus for the Kohala Railway in the early 1900's. The clear calm water here makes a great spot for snorkeling and diving. Old mill equipment and even the shipwrecked Steamship Kauai can be found underwater. Many variety of fish make their home in this protected cove. The surrounding coastline is very rocky but there is easy access to the water from the harbor.
There are picnic tables and shade trees with great views of the ocean (and whales during season). Camping is allowed by permit only. Signs warn "Do Not Drink the Water" from park faucets.
