An award winning bridge, fabulous water views and you will approach Koolewong if you come from Woy Woy. Easily accessible but a lot of care is needed with the high level of muggles, therefore higher difficulty level. This includes fishermen, bike riders who can be on you in seconds and general walkers. Take the bike this is a great cache to do while riding your bike. While here stop to learn a little history and enjoy the view. Small female trinket for first to find if liked.
Gateway to Koolewong
This cycle bridge was constructed in 2007, a nearby plaque was unveiled in 2008. The original timber bridge built in 1941 for Brisbane Water Drive spanned the waterway at this point see the picture. It was replaced by the new concrete road bridge in 1985 which was moved closer to the rail bridge. The old timber bridge fell into disrepair and fishermen would use it as a platform to fish the waters. Later Gosford council elected to dismantle the bridge further and the middle section of the old bridge was removed. This left the two ends which were still used for fishing. In the late 1980’s Couincil then decided that the remaining bridge was also dangerous and the remaining timber bridge was removed much to the dismay of local fishermen.

The new bicycle and walking bridge using a suspension technique opened in 2007 and provided safe crossing for bicycle riders and walkers. A local bridge designer designed it and the bridge spans 85 metres in length and its highest point is 25.8 metres. It was then debated what the new bridge would be named. Of course Koolewong residents weren’t really consulted. Names came from out of the woodwork one popular one was to name it after Spike Milligan a popular local celebrity who’s family lived in the Woy Woy area. Names suggested at the time; Spike Milligan Bridge, Spikes Bridge, AWM Settree Bridge, Andrew Murphy Bridge, Don Leggett Bridge, James Webb Bridge, Keith O'Connell, Kokoda, Peninsula Bridge, Woy Woy Bridge, The 4 Bays Bridge, Parks Bay Bridge, Unity, Woy Woy Bay Inlet Bridge and Parkes Bay Inlet Bridge. Koolewong residents see this bridge as the Gateway to Koolewong. The name Koolewong is based on an Aboriginal word which meant ‘place of the Koala’. Although koala’s have been rarely seen in the area after the first homes were constructed in the area and there is no sign now of Koala’s. CONGRATULATIONS FTF: Shifter Brains.
