The Cowell stone has nothing to do with the X factor but is believed to be an ancient boundary stone. I have been told that if you look at the top carefully you can make out an ancient map. The stone is a glacial erratic block, a modest yet important relic presumed to have been a waymark and location for trading, even religious ceremonies. The origin of the name is unknown but it could be Saxon or even might relate to a 13th century family name. Another theory is that it is a corruption of Cow hill but I suppose we will never know. The stone was moved in the early 1980s by local historions Ben Ripper & Peter Howling as it was in danger of being damaged by farm machinery. I am still trying to find out it's original location but do not think it was moved far. I am indebted to Steven Howling for his never ending knowledge of the local area. TB for FTF in cache
