Background
The State Aquatic Centre proposes to develop an international competition standard pool (FINA compliant) and aquatic recreation facilities on the Domain site north of Westfield Marion. (FINA stands for Federation Internationale de Natation and is the governing body of international aquatic sports competitions).
Key objectives
Provide all year round indoor swim facilities for the community and athletes and major events:
Provide FINA compliant aquatic centre with two pools, with one pool for lap swimming and one for diving and water polo;
To develop a stronger sports sector and encourage greater participation in sport by the Marion and regional community.
Complete the development of the Domain and the Marion Regional Centre.
The integration of the GP Plus Centre (education and preventative health care) within the Domain.
To integrate with the redevelopment of the Oaklands railway Station
The State Government has adapted its approach in delivering the SAC from a Public Private Partnership to a design and construct method. In March 2009 tenders were called for this and the State Government selected Candetti Constructions as builder for the SAC and GP Plus.
The State Aquatic Centre will host a FINA compliant component for training, competition and community use and leisure water facilities. The FINA facility comprises two 50m pools, one for lap swimming and the second for diving and water polo. This also includes accompanying facilities for drug testing, media and coach offices etc. It is proposed to accommodate 4500 seats for events.
The leisure / recreational component comprises a minimum area of 1000 m2 of warm water pools.
The State Aquatic Centre will be an integrated facility for both athletes and public and shall provide an indoor leisure aquatic centre and complementary facilities that cater for the following range of activities:
Aquatic education
Leisure
Sport
Health, hydrotherapy and fitness
Food, function and social opportunities
The aquatic and complementary facilities will need to cater for the following user groups:

History
Initially, the State Aquatic Centre was named the South West Indoor Aquatic Centre (SWIAC).
The campaign for a year-round indoor aquatic facility for the Southwest region of Adelaide commenced in the early 1990's, as a result of the growing community recognition of a deficiency of indoor swimming/aquatic space in the face of increasing demand. Several working parties and action groups led the push for development of appropriate infrastructure for the Southwest, and their work included the preparation of preliminary plans and examination of funding options.
In the 1990's, several studies were undertaken which confirmed the need for such a facility in this metropolitan region. In 1997, the City of Marion committed $3 million towards developing an indoor swimming facility as a catalyst for finding other funding partners.
In February 1998, an Information Meeting for the general public was held, and arising from this meeting, a Committee was formed. In July 1998, this took the form of an incorporated independent body, the South West Indoor Aquatic Centre (SWIAC) Committee Inc. The Committee members include community and regional council representatives. The Strategic Plan of the Committee is to secure a significant year-round indoor aquatic facility for the South West region of metropolitan Adelaide and a major focus of the strategy is to promote awareness amongst the community, clubs, organizations and community leaders, and to actively promote, coordinate and undertake effective lobbying.
SWIAC's Mission Statement is:
"To secure the development of an international standard community and FINA compliant State indoor swimming centre in Marion."
