Geocache Description:

The Round Tower was constructed at the same time as the naïve wall, its date is uncertain, however its thought to be Norman but there is no supporting evidence. Research by W.G. Goode suggest that round towers with these measurements are Saxon which places them before 1066. This is based in the type of flints in the towers construction. The octagonal belfry was added in the 14th century with 4 tall decorated period windows alternating with blank arches, no battlement have been added to the top. The 1553 inventory records 3 bells, however for a long time there has been only one bell. The nave windows are 15th century compared to the transept windows which are 14th century. The North porch was constructed in the 14th century but was rebuilt in 1624. The thatched roof to the nave was destroyed by fire accidently in 1948 and replaced with Norfolk reed. In 1608 the Vicar of St Peters was murdered in his bed by his curate, he was having an affair with the vicars wife, however a servant overheard the crime and went to the local JP. Mrs. James was burnt and consumed to ashes on Castle Hill in Thetford the other party confessed some years later and was drawn and hung. Lots more information can be found at www.shellrockgroup.f9.co.uk. This information came from the church leaflet complied by Richard Butler and Simon Cotton. Permission to place this cache was granted by Stephen Burroughes one of the keyholders. Please replace the cache as you found it. If anybody would like to expand to this series please do, I would just ask that you could let Sadexploration know first so he can keep track of the Church numbers and names to avoid duplication. There is also a Church Micro Stats page found via the Bookmark list
