This stadium is a special place which holds fond memories for me. It has a very special vibe whether provincial, national or international games are played here.
Outeniqua Park is the home of the local provincial team, known as the SWD Eagles. The SWD (South Western Districts) is a very small sporting district, but is very often underestimated by the rest of the country.
The HSBC Sevens World Series, SA leg was held at this very stadium from 2002 - 2010. Unfortunately they lost the bid to host the Tournament from 2011. Port Elizabeth is now the host city.
George is also the home of the former SA Sevens Rugby Team's (Blitz Bokke) coach, Paul Treu. He was an Eagle himself and also played for the Blitz Bokke a few years ago.
Since the Sevens Tournament started at Outeniqua Park, I worked there. Liaising with the Media, Commentators and players and later on worked at the ticket sales.
The Sevens did wonders for tourism in and around George when the players and supporters stayed at various hotels in the area and visited all the attractions.
The odd local and provincial games are still played here.
Winners of the SA leg Sevens Tournament since they played in George:
- 2002, 2005 - Fiji
- 2003 - England
- 2004, 2006, 2007, 2009, 2010 - New Zealand
- 2008 - Springboks
Be sure to use stealth all the time, as this can be a very high muggle zone, especially on match day.
