Geocache Description:

This is something I've tried a few times with bent welding rods in the yard trying to find a water line, my Dad has more sensitivity for it. Only use the hint if you need to, my Gps needs an attitude adjustment! :)

When you think about it, it is a strange name for a simple skill. Water Witching is also known as divining, dowsing, or water dowsing. Dowsing is used in attempts to locate ground water, buried metals or ores, gemstones, oil, gravesites and many other objects and materials, as well as so-called currents of earth radiation (Ley Lines), without the use of scientific apparatus. This skill tended to be practiced in more rural areas, away from the places where professional hydrologists, geophysicists and geologists were to be found. Such a term would have been more an acknowledgment that the person was skilled rather than someone to be afraid of. These days this person might be called a Water Whisperer.

One Y- or two L-shaped twigs or rods, called a dowsing rod, divining rod or witching rod is sometimes used during dowsing. It is held lightly in both hands as you walk slowly over the ground. The twig or device will pull the Y down toward the ground as you cross over the spot. If you have two wires, you hold them lightly and they will cross when you are over what you seek. Mark the spot, and approach from another direction, often you can track the route or direction of the water flow. Some dowsers use other equipment or sometimes no equipment at all.

As long as man grows crops and raises animals, he will need water. The better the supply, the better for his future. Therefore, if someone can come along and point out, with relative ease, where to place a well to get a steady supply of good water, he will be appreciated as a benefactor to the communities. There is no accepted scientific rationale behind dowsing, and there is no scientific evidence that it is effective, but people have relied on it for generations.
