Geocache Description:

The terrain on your journey to this cache is relatively easy; the trails are well maintained with gentle up and down grades. Please remain on the trails until you are within 20 feet of the cache. Use the Bald Cypress and Osmanthus Trail to reach this cache.

The partridge berry is a low growing, evergreen vine that is found in dry or moist forest, especially along sandy slopes. The sandy trail edges in First Landing’s maritime forest provide a perfect habitat for this plant. As you hike through the forest and swamp area along the Bald Cypress Trail you can frequently see the small green leaves covering the edge of the trail. Between May and October you can see the partridge berry blooms, very small white flowers. Red berry fruits can be seen in late summer and fall. The fruits are commonly consumed by ruffed grouse, turkeys, skunks, bobwhite quail, mice, and foxes. However, only the last three animals can be found at First Landing State Park. The plant’s leaves are known to have been used by Native Americans to make a tea to aid in childbirth. Some people use the partridge berry as a ground cover in their garden, appreciating the fact that this evergreen as a rich dark green color to their garden during the winter.

The cache is a standard plastic container with a log book, pencil, information for muggles, and the VSP Blooming Adventure cards. Other items in the container have been left by other geocachers, please remember if you leave an item in the cache, it must be family appropriate.
