Gary did not want his treasure stolen, so he hid it on the mountain. To scare off treasure seakers he rigged it to give off a blinding flash of light and a clap of thunder whenever it was approached. All summer there was thunder and lightning on the mountain and Gary knew his treasure was safe. Kathy, however, was not happy. She could not sleep with all that noise. She had to find that box and disable the noise but Gary would not tell her where it was.
Kathy called Bryan and asked how to find it. He told her that sound was 340 m/sec slower than light (UPDATE 7-4-12, It was brought to my attention that my figure here is wrong. In my haste to create this puzzle, I used the speed of sound instead of the diference of sound and light. The puzzle would be too much trouble to change now, so use the 340 m/s figure) and to take a stop watch and her gps and go to the top of Mt. Greylock, record her locaton, look southsoutheast toward the mountain and wait for the light and thunder. Then go to the top of Jimminy Peak and do the same thing.
Kathy waited at N42 40.372 W073 08.412. She saw the flash of light at 9:12pm and heard the clap of thunder at 9:13pm. At N42 32.846 W073 17.155 she saw the flash at 10pm and heard the thunder 32 seconds later. Kathy now had all she needed to find Gary's Treasure but she is having trouble. Can you help her?
