The Cowichan Valley Trail will take you from Duncan through Lake Cowichan and down past the Kinsol Trestle following former CN and E&N railway lines. With many access points and 8 trestles, it's a beautiful trail to walk, jog or bike. From the Island Spirit Team, we hope you enjoy your time in the Cowichan Valley.
All the Island Spirit Legacy Caches are within a 2 steps of the trail, unless otherwise noted. There is no need to bushwack or trample the vegetation.
Western Tanager
Western Tanagers are a very colourful songbird, but as usual it is only the males who are colourful and vocal. Female Western Tanagers are gray on the back and wings and olive underneath. Unlike most of its mostly tropical family, the Western Tanager breeds quite far north, even as far as the Northwest Territories. The red face of the Western Tanager comes from the pigment rhodoxanthin which is not a pigment produced by the bird. The pigment comes from their diet of insects who in turn get the pigment from plants.
