Geocache Description:

The Cowichan Valley Trail will take you from Duncan through Lake Cowichan and down past the Kinsol Trestle following former CN and E&N railway lines. With many access points and 8 trestles, it's a beautiful trail to walk, jog or bike. From the Island Spirit Team, we hope you enjoy your time in the Cowichan Valley.

All the Island Spirit Legacy Caches are within a 2 steps of the trail, unless otherwise noted. There is no need to bushwack or trample the vegetation.

Trumpeter Swan

The Trumpeter Swan is the largest waterfowl found in North America. Between 1600 and 1800 their numbers were dramatically reduced by hunting. Their largest flight feathers were considered the highest quality quill pens at the time. A long lived swan, Trumpeters can live for as long as 24 years and will form pair bonds when they are three or four years old. These pairs will stay together, even within the migratory flocks. Sometimes, when a male has lost his mate, he will not mate again. These pairs will lay 1 to 9 eggs in a large open bowl shape nest made of grasses and other aquatic vegetation.
