Geocache Description:

Over the past couple of years, I've done a series of geocaches that were dedicated to one of my favorite rock bands, the Grateful Dead (or should I say "dead-icated"?). But the Dead aren't strictly the only group that I listen to with any regularity. I've been a fan of the Beach Boys since the early '60's. So I thought, why not a series for that group as well (especially since they are celebrating their 50th anniversary this year). Now they played Portland quite a few times, but only in a couple of places (and those sites already have Grateful Dead caches). So this series won't be for where they played, but for locations that are tied to some of the songs that they wrote and sang.

The Beach Boys were most popular for their sun, surf, car songs (with an occassional ballad tossed in), and for the Four Freshman-inspired harmonies that was their trademark vocal signature. They were at one time the most popular rock'n'roll group in America, knocking the Beatles off the top of the charts with their first #1 hit record, "I Get Around". The core group was comprised of three brothers, a cousin, and a high school classmate. Though they've had high times and low times over the years, the sound they produce is still instantly recognizable when a song comes on the radio.

Last year saw the Beach Boys release one of the most fabeled rock albums of all times. It was, for 45 years, on the shelf, in boxes of jumbled tapes, nothing more than a uncompleted concept album, back when concept albums were unknown. The album was/is called "SMILE", and was conceived by Brian Wilson as the follow-up to their "Pet Sounds" release. Paul McCartney has said that album encourged the Beatles to make "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band". "SMILE" was to be the Beach Boys' one-up on that album. Sadly, for too many reasons to mention here (see the webpage link above for more), it was never released. Until last year. Finally.

Over the years, bits and pieces of songs that were recorded for it made their way onto other Beach Boys albums (as well as countless bootleg tapes and CDs). The song that this cache is dedicated to was originally conceived for "SMILE" (as part of the "Elements" suite), and was called "I Love to Say Da-Da".

When the Smile project collapsed, they continued working during the Wild Honey sessions with the track renamed as "Cool, Cool Water". The 1967 recording did not make it to the final track listing and was shelved. Three years later, the group released a modified version of "Cool, Cool Water" on their 1970 album Sunflower, featuring new lyrics by Mike Love and a much different arrangement. This is the most familiar version of the song released by the Beach Boys.

Choosing this song for my next Beach Boys cache seemed to be a natural, given the compatible karma this location give off. So quiet and peaceful in the middle of a bustling metropolis. You can hear the "cool, cool water" bubbling and flowing.

"In an ocean or in a glass,
Cool water is such a gas..."

The cache is located in a spot familiar to geocachers, in a container that is familiar as well. It is too small to contain any swag, so BYOP. Please replace as found, and using stealth will be helpful. May the geo-force be with you.

Congratulations to PDXMadDog for the FTF on a "cool, cool, water" day in Portland, and a Well Done to concordgrape78 for the STF (which can be used for the Johnny Come Lately challenge).
