What's that you say, pirates in West Vancouver? Well if you believe in fractured history read this. History books will tell you that in 1791 Spanish explorer Jose Maria Narvaez the 23 year-old captain of the Santa Saturnina visited what is now Saturna Island, Sechelt and the site of what is now the city of Vancouver. This is confirmed by a plaque placed at the west end of Ambleside Park by the Lions Club in 1941 celebrating the 150 year anniversary of his visit. This visit was one year before Captain George Vancouver made his "discovery". Hmm the Narvaez Canucks???? What the history books won`t tell you is that one of Narvaez`s duties was to try to find and capture Long Jean Trapd'or, who was one of the mutineers aboard the Bounty - yes that Bounty. It was rumored that Trapd'or left Pitcairn Island in 1790, shortly after the mutiny and took up a life of piracy up the west coast of North America. It is also rumored that he hid his plundered treasure in several places up and down the coast of British Columbia. I determined from studying several notes scrawled on the inside cover of the Trapd'or family bible, one such cache of his loot was left close to what is now the Capilano River. In those days the river was much higher than what we see today and you can actually see just how high the river flowed as you walk along the trails. Good luck in finding his treasure after all these years. Original swag - Pirate treasure for the little kids and carabiners for the big kids. (Note: the next movie in the series will be out in the summer. It will be rated Arrrrrrrrr!! What is a pirate's favorite letter of the alphabet? Why its the C of course)) If you start your search from either of the small parking spots on Capilano Park Road the terrain is a 2. If you approach from any other directions it could be a 3 or even a 4.
