The Old Highway To Macon #3
In the early 20th Century the easy way to transport people and freight between Columbus Ga. and Macon Ga. was by train. The road network that existed between the two cities was a patchwork of county roads - constructed of dirt, gravel and macadam - intended for local traffic within the farming communities along the way. Driving the roads from Columbus to Macon was arduous under the best of circumstances! During the Great Depression the Works Progress Administration (WPA) was created to put the large masses of unemployed men to work on public works projects. This Highway between Columbus and Macon was one of those projects. It was a concrete surfaced two-lane road with concrete bridges. In an age when most trucks had only six wheels and there were far fewer cars, this new highway truly opened safe and comfortable travel between the cities. Over the years, as trucks got much bigger and the number of cars grew exponentially, the Macon Highway slowly disappeared as new and better roads were built to replace it. Now most of the original Macon Highway is gone. Segments of it still exist in Muscogee County, now serving as Chattsworth Rd. and Upatoi Lane. Upatoi Lane is still concrete just as it was when it was a part of the most modern of roads. This series of caches is placed to honor this road. Come ride the old road and remember a time before our car culture existed.
