CALTOWIE Origionally known as 'CARCOWIE' Lizards Water Hole"
This is a small Town about 245km from Adelaide in the mid north. This small Town was settled by European settlers in the 1800's. The Town was used as a Camping ground for Teamsters Hauling Timber, as the Yackamoorundie Creek here provided a good place to refresh animals. The Town grew eventually having a Coach Builder, Flourmill, Chaffmill, Machinery Manufacturer, 3 General stores and 2 Hotels. The town has declined over time, Now the Town has only 1 Historic Hotel still opperating where you can sit back have a good meal or just a cool drink and Ice cold beer. Stores have closed, but the community still continues with Bowls, and join other towns in the area to enjoy sports. With many local farmers continuing support in the Town, it is a quiet Town only a short distance from Laura 15 minute drive west, Gladstone 10 minute drive south/west and Jamestown 15 minute drive east. It is a nice little stop over to stretch your legs. legs
