Geocache Description:

San Francisco Cemetery is a large cemetery located on State Highway 518, South of Taos. Before the Spanish settled here in 1716, this was the site of a Taos Indian farming settlement, hence the name, Ranchos. Apache raids led to the sites abandoment and then resettled at the end of the 18th century by the Spanish and has been a ranching and farming settlement ever since. The original name was Rancho de Don Fernando de Taos and later changed to Ranchos de Taos.

At the Village of Ranchos de Taos,4 miles Southwest of the town of Taos, there is a famous Church (San Francisco de Asis). It was built between 1772 and 1816. It is located on the Plaza in Ranchos de Taos. The Church is often photographed and painted and proclaims geometric satisfaction mixed with naive forthrightness. Georgia O'Keeffe was quoted "one of the most beautiful buildings left in the United States by the the early Spaniards". It has been photographed by such people as Ansel Adams and Paul Strand

There is a Morada at this Cemetery. A Morada is a Church where the Penitente's worshiped. The Sect Los Hermanos Penitente's (The Penitente Brothers)were a fraternal order society active throughout the 19th and 20th centuries in Northern New Mexico

The cache is a camo'd Bison Tube. State Road 518 is a heavy traveled road. Pull off into the drivway to the cemetery(gate is closed). USE CAUTION

Spirit caches are a series placed at or near NM cemeteries in hopes of paying respect to the pioneer ancestors having "gone" on before us, and, possibly picking up a bit of history of the area.
