HU: ATOMKI hivatalosan 1954. július elsején jött létre. Szalay Sándor (1909-1987) volt az első igazgatója, aki jól ismert fizikus volt Magyarországon. Ő volt az az ember, aki Magyarországon elkezdte a nukleáris kutatásokat, és így az ő vezetése alatt vált az ATOMKI a világon jól ismert kutató intézetté.

EN: The official date of ATOMKI's foundation is 1 July, 1954. The founding director of the institute was Alexander Szalay (1909–1987), a great personality in the physics of Debrecen and Hungary. It was he who started nuclear research in Hungary, and it was under his leadership that Atomki became a research institute known worldwide.
