One of the early established farms in the Tea Tree Gully District was the Surrey Farm.
In the 1850's, the Smith family were the original owners of the land that contained the Surrey Farm.
It consisted of almond orchards and hay paddocks with fruit trees around the cottage style house. The majority of the land was used for vineyards. There was also a very steep hill and quarry where the land was unable to be used for cultivation.
In 1888, the adjacent Elder Green property owners built a large house. The Smith family saw this and decided to build a new bigger home. The new elaborate building is a testimony to what was once the Surrey Farm.
With the compulsory purchase of land by the SA Land Commission in 1975 for development of the area, the farm building is now used as the Golden Grove Homestead Community Child Care Centre on Surrey Farm Drive.
This cache is a little bigger than our usual nano, so bring a pen for initials only.
