Beyond The Grave is a multicache with a two part puzzle to help you arrive at coordinates for the final cache. Each puzzle has three locations, which will be described in detail below. The final cache container is a small click lock box, big enough to contain a few small souvenirs and travel bugs.
Please also note that the council and Cemetery Trust have told me that discarded needles are not unknown. For this reason exercise common sense while inside the cemetery, and note that the final cache is outside the cemetery (only observation skills are needed inside).
Overview of Puzzles
In order to determine the coordinates of the final cache, you will have to solve two puzzles.
- The first puzzle involves looking at the three photos attached to the listing and find the corresponding locations within the cemetery. Having noted the coordinates for the three locations, you need to calculate their geographic midpoint.
- The second puzzle involves going to the three listed waypoint locations and answer the questions posed about them. This will give you a series of numbers with which you will be able to adjust the coordinates found in Puzzle 1.
Puzzle 1
Take a look at the images below. They show three different locations within the cemetery. The images are also in the gallery full size. You will need to go to each location and calculate the coordinates of your position using your GPS or smartphone.

Once you have coordinates for the three locations, you need to calculate their geometric midpoint. This simply involves averaging all the Northings (adding up and dividing by three), and separately averaging all the Westings. You can check your answers for the geometric midpoint here:
You should now have the puzzle 1 coordinates! There’s still work to do; they will need to be adjusted following the results of puzzle 2.
Puzzle 2
For puzzle 2, go to the three listed waypoints and answer the following questions:
- Mrs. Liquorice Allsorts died aged 7A years.
- PC Pearson's daughter died aged B years (add the two digits together)
- Mark and Sarah Firth's baby twins, died aged just 2C days
- PC Pearson himself, stabbed in Castle Street in 189D
- Mr. Liquorice Allsorts died on May E 1886
- Mary Ellen Firth died November 2F 1848
You now have six digits A-F. You will need to amend the coordinates you found in puzzle one with these digits. The amendments you need to make are:
- Add A B C to the Northings
- Subtract D E F from the Westings
Now Puzzle 2 should be complete (and hopefully you have the coordinates)!
Final Cache
So, to summarise, take the coordinates you calculated from Puzzle 1. Using the answers to the questions in Puzzle 2, add ABC to the Northings, and subtract DEF from the Westings. You should now have the coordinates for the final cache. Good luck!
