Modernisation and then mobile phone ownership signalled the end for this iconic symbol of Britain, yet deep affection has staved off the final extinction of the red telephone box.
I started this series with the nearest red telephone box to me, which sadly is in a terrible state and unlikely to survive as the local council rejected BT's offer to buy it for £1.
Imagine my delight when having planned to place my second Legend™ in the village that I grew up in, based on the box that sits outside the pub my grandparents used to run (apparently there is a house in New Orleans with the same name) I found that it had been saved by the local council and the fantastic efforts of local residents led by Claire Collins. They have done Milland proud. Not only that, they have found a very useful and unusual use for their K6 classic kiosk.
My Nan, Hilda Collins, was the village's oldest resident until last autumn when she passed peacefully away at the age of 97. In her 60's, perhaps to supplement her pension, she used to clean all the telephone boxes in the area and I have fond memories of going on long walks with her as a child, starting with this one. As well as raising 8 children of her own, she fostered many african children in what must have been an unusual sight at the time in such a rural location. Like the phone box, she was a legend and so tough she was possibly forged.
Don't worry, you won't have a long walk for this multi and all the information required below can be found from the published coordinates.
You do not need to enter box and as it is now alarmed it is best you don't. Look up high for A and around the back for B, C & F.
There is a pub car-park nearby.
A = The last 2 digits of a number starting UKR
B = First letter of the company that made the Box (Where A=1, Z=26 etc.)
C = Number of letters in name of the foundry that made the Box
D = Number of letters in name of nearby Public House
E = Number of letters in name of equipment inside the Box. (See link on cache page if not installed!)
F = Number of letters in name of the city the Box was made in.
The Cache can be found at :-
N 51 02.(A + B + C - D)
W 000 48.(A + E + F + 2)*4
It is posible to park on verge near cache but it is probably best to stretch your legs - it isn't far.
My sincere thanks to Ash's Cachers and Claire Collins for helping me set this cache.
If you would like to extend the series, just drop me a line so I can organise the numbering.
