Geocache Description:

Geocaching.com breaks their Leap Day Record!

RachelsRiffRaff has enjoyed doing all the local caches and now its time to give back. With the Geocaching.com's challenge to break the record of logged caches in one day, we have put down 5 new caches. This listing was enabled early to alert all local (and visiting) Geocachers that new caches would be enabled and ready to go on February 29th, in time for cachers to log them, and help break the record.

February 29, 2012 marks the third Leap Day since the inception of Geocaching.com back in 2001. To celebrate this special occasion, the website had posed a challenge to their users - to beat the previous record of logged caches in a single day.

On the last Leap Day, which occurred on February 29, 2008, a total of 36,696 separate accounts logged an "Attended" or "Found It" on a cache. With the exponential growth seen in the geocaching community since 2008, the number of accounts to log a cache was expected to increase significantly this year.

And increase it did!!

More than 70,000 geocachers from around the world celebrated Leap Day by stepping outside for a GPS-powered treasure hunt. Their motivation was an opportunity that comes once every four years — going geocaching on February 29. They joined friends and family to explore the world around them, exercise, and earn a digital reward. The Leap Day goal was ambitious. Geocachers rallied to double the number of accounts – 36,696 – that logged geocaches last Leap Day in 2008.

As of 12:30pm PST on March 2, 2012 - 79,472! geocaching accounts logged caches on Leap Day 2012.

Airport History
The airport, developed initially in the 1930’s, has a significant pilot training history having been home to the Wanganui Commercial Pilot School (based at the Wanganui Aero Club from 1953 through until the 1980’s) and also the home of New Zealand’s first commercial topdressing pilot training school operated by Dalcom Aviation Training. These were New Zealand's first full time ground/air training courses for professional civil pilot licences and it was no accident that Wanganui was chosen as the base. The flying days available, abundance of available training areas, relatively low levels of turbulence and a large runway system provide a perfect flying training base.

The airport is a Joint Venture (JV) Airport, owned in equal partnership by the Wanganui District Council (WDC) and the NZ Government (the Crown) through the Ministry of Transport, and is managed by the Wanganui Airport Authority (WAA), a business unit of the WDC.
