How Geocaching Works

I have a friend who is a volunteer park ranger, and he said the rangers suggested a cache placement here. Great idea! It's also very cool that the rangers support geocaching and see that it brings visitors to the park.
Getting to this cache will take a 2-mile round-trip hike past the Aztec Cave and other beautiful scenery in the Franklin Mountains State Park.
Parking coordinates are provided below, and the trailhead is at the same location.
When you arrive at Aztec Cave, you'll notice that you are less than 400 feet away from the cache as the crow flies. But you are not a crow. Please don't try to be. That would be dangerous and unnecessary. Instead, follow the trail around the left of the cave. Continue on the trail to the waypoint listed below. Once you are at the waypoint, you will again be less than 400 feet from the cache, and it will be a much easier 400 feet.
Other notes: Unless you have a Texas State Parks Pass, fee to get into the park is $5. Hours are 8-5 during the winter. In summer, park opens at 6:30 a.m. on the weekends. Make sure you get out of the park before the gates close at 5. Permit for this cache is on file at park headquarters.
A note on the difficulty ratings: The hike to the Aztec Cave is steep, but there is a trail and it is kid friendly. Going around the cave gets steep for a short period and is less kid friendly. For about 50 feet, you might have to use hands and feet.
You are in the desert. Be aware of things that poke, bite and sting.
One final note: Take time to enjoy the scenery and the cave. I can't help but think if this was in New Mexico, there would be tourists everywhere, with poems written about its beauty and people claiming the cave dirt could heal your ills. But because it's in El Paso, Texas, it's a hidden gem, and I usually see only a few people hiking up there.
