This cache is found at Top O'Slate above Haslingden. This area contains a fascinating mix of history, geology, wildlife and the addition of Halo. Take a walk around the site in the daylight and discover lost quarries ancient track ways and resident wildlife. Venture up at twilight and experience the ethereal beauty of Halo and watch as the towns in the Rossendale Valley below come to life.
The southern part of the site at Top O’ Slate is a former sandstone quarry Haslingden was notable for its stone quarrying, and Haslingden Flag (a quartz-based sandstone) was exported throughout the country in the 19th century with the opening up of the rail network. It was used in the paving of London, including Trafalgar Square. This “Flag “was widely used in East Lancashire and was in demand throughout the country due to its tough hard wearing characteristics. Its use as fencing was more local to East Lancs and many examples survive in the district. The uprights were often joined together with iron clips to aid stability. Wandering around Top O`Slate you see evidence of the quarry workings scattered about, though nature has reclaimed them for herself. If you keep your eyes peeled you may see the covered entrances to 2 caves. Exiting the area by the main gate and turning left then through the hole in the wall on your right will take you into the field at the bottom of Cribden. Here you may meet model plane enthusiasts using the grassy runway but you will also, see a prime example a Haslingden Flag fence half way down the field. Plenty more caches around and about too!
