This cemetery is one of the state’s largest and most historic black cemeteries. The 17 acre burial ground is home to civil-rights leader Daisy Gatson Bates, attorney Scipio Jones, the first president of Arkansas Baptist College in Little Rock Joseph Booker, and over 12,000 other residents.
Until a couple of years ago, the cemetery was being poorly maintained. The lot was extremely overgrown and littered with trash. “It’s a situation that’s just unconscionable,” said former Sen. Irma Brown. “We talk about African-American history in Little Rock. Where do you start? Go to Haven of Rest Cemetery,” said B.J. McCoy, board member of Friends of Haven. “Turning Haven of Rest Cemetery into something to be proud of will take time,” McCoy recently explained at the Little Rock cemetery while pointing to debris covering a patch of flat headstones. “It’s not possible to say who is buried there with any degree of confidence,” he said.
The cemetery was foreclosed on in 2000 after years of financial troubles and a debt of more than $1 million. Since then, some effort has been made to clean up the cemetery. Haven of Rest is currently in its best shape in years.
