A traditional cache on Mt Herbert, a popular daytrip to the highest point on Banks Peninsula. I couldnt place it right on the top as there is a puzzle cache there. Allow at least half a day for this one. Take the spoiler photo' it would be a shame to go away empty handed after all that effort.
Afore ye go, a warning.
While often a pleasant place, Mt Herbert can become nasty in some weather conditions. There is very little shelter or drinkable water. You should check the weather forecast before you set out. (visit link)
Cloud building up to the south is a bad sign, and the famous Christchurch “Beastly Easterly” can clag the Summit out at very short notice, even on an otherwise nice day. On the other hand, if you strike a hot sunny day you will need to gear up for that as well. Sometimes you could get both. Snow is common in the winter.
Windproof clothing and solid footwear with good traction is essential. Tell someone where you are going.
Unless you are very experienced operating in adverse conditions, do not attempt this in the dark or in low cloud/fog, It would spoil the view at the very least and there is a bit of potential to fall off something.
There is good phone reception on the top and the Lyttelton side.
The trip.
There are several ways to access Mt Herbert, best you read the info here. (visit link)
The cache
You are looking for a camo’d film canister style cache with a log sheet and a pencil, hidden at the base of a small cliff.
Public transport.
If you want to try something a little different, you could catch a bus to Lyttelton and take the ferry to Diamond Harbour.
Plan that here (visit link)
