This cache has been archived.

STEMARTHON: I have decided to archive this cache. It has been trashed a number of times and I am also now limited in my ability to care for caches.

Geocache Description:

This cache is a continuation of the Hanover Branch Railroad series started by GEO50CHEVY in the town of Hanover.

The Hanover Branch Railroad was chartered in 1846 by some Hanover businessmen, principally a Mr. E. Y. Perry after the Old Colony Railroad built a line through North Abington. While the railroad's shops and enginehouse were located in Hanover an 1899 map shows a turntable being located in North Abington adjacent to this geocache's location.

If you stand on the sidewalk looking easterly where the Hanover Branch used to cross Monroe St. what appear to be the remains of that turntable are to your right. Walk down the sidewalk and just as you get to the first house on the left, underneath a cedar tree, you can see the circular granite wall of the turntable. The cache is not located at the turntable pit. Please respect the private property adjacent to the pit.

In late 2014 the old railroad rails and ties were removed by The Iron Horse Preservation Society with the promise that they'd clean the area up and put down a surface suitable for a rail trail that would connect with the existing Rockland Rail Trail. They took the rails for scrap and failed to keep their promise of laying a suitable walking surface. In the Fall of 2017 the trail was paved through a grant obtained by the town and the Rockland trail organization which means that the cache is now much more accessible than before. It is so easy to find now that the biggest problem is going to be the POISON IVY that surrounds the location. It is not quite 100% wheelchair accessible but a wheelchair can easily get within 5 feet of the cache.

My GPSr was quite bouncy in the area so you may have to use some "geosense" if you can't get your GPSr to settle down.

BEWARE OF POISON IVY!
