Geocache Description:

The small market town of Soham lies on the A142 between Newmarket and Ely.

Soham Mere was under water until windmills, and then steam pumping engines, were introduced to drain the Fens. The area has a rich archaeological past, and excavations during the construction of the Fordham by-pass revealed extensive ancient settlements on the banks of the Mere.

The bridge for cycles and pedestrians at the south of the town, appeared seemingly overnight, and standing on its highest point, the view across the Mere is quite remarkable considering this super flat landscape!

The cache is a small camo tube – please bring your own pencil and a pin - it is not on the footbridge. Good off road parking for one car is available at the cache site.

The bridge itself is wheelchair and buggy accessible, but be warned, if you venture up on to it in winter months, wrap up warmly!
