Geocache Description:

History of Iroquois Park hill before it became a park in 1889 is a little sketchy but old maps indicate it was known as Burnt Knob.  Early settlers of the Louisville area most likely found a hill top devoid of trees probably caused by a wild fire.  Wild grasses most likely have grown here for years as the hill top ecosystem went through its natural succession of vegetation to reestablished itself.

Summit Field aka Burnt Knob after a controlled burn in Jan 2000 to contain the spread of unwanted plants.

During the 1930's when Jacobs Lodge was built as a Work Progress Administration project, the hilltop was also transformed to support recreational activities including basketball courts, tennis courts, baseball fields, and multiuse fields.  During the 1980's an effort was launched to return the hilltop to a more natural grassy plains environment of its earlier days.
