Two short tapered square pillars constructed of fieldstones and morter capped by a concrete slab stand as the original gateway to the Fort. When placed there they marked the junction of the Fort road and the Missoula-Bitterroot Valley road. Today they face one of Missoula's busiest intersections, the junction of Reserve Street and South Avenue. The first 300 yards of the Fort road was closed to the public use in 1974. The remainder of the 4,753 foot entry way is joined by roadways from both Reserve and South Avenue. It connects with the Fort internal road system near the Army Reserve Center and the Nez Perce War Memorial. This raised road is lined on both sides by elm trees which were planned by the Civilian Conservation Corps about 1934. Prior to the abandonment of the Fort by the regular army in 1947, the road led to a sentry box and Provost Marshall's office. The sign between the pillars that denotes the original entrance was placed there in 1977 by the County of Missoula. The improvements to this corner and sign were completed by Terry Worrell in 1998 and 1999 for his Eagle Scout Project for Boy Scouts of America Troop 1910. This sign was repainted and the rock pillars were repaired and remortered. The railroad, landscaping, rocks, bushes and walkway were also completed. The copper covers were installed on the support poles to help from rotting. The sitting bench was placed near the corner facing South Reserve. Please use stealth and put cache back like you found it so the next person can enjoy. Look to your South West and just stop and think what it might of look like 1947.
