This is a quart-capacity duct-taped plastic granola container hidden just below the cemetery of one of the more picturesque old churches in Burke County. Although the current church was not established until 1925, burials in its cemetery go back to the mid-1800's, with listed births in the mid-1700's.
The current name of the church is McDowell Independent Presbyterian Church. I have been told but do not know whether it is true that the church was earlier known as McElrath Church. (A much larger and newer church named McElrath AME Church is not too far away.)
Revolutionary War soldier Major John McDowell is buried in the cemetery, along with his wife Hannah (probably McElrath) born ca 1755 in Virginia. Nearby are the graves of McElraths and other McDowells.
Park on the paved lot in front of the church. The cache is not located near the church. It is located near, but not in the cemetery. Do not search during church hours. The area is very peaceful most other times, but looking at or taking photos of the church and old graves or decorating the graves will make a good cover if anyone happens to see your vehicle and come over to investigate.
You will need to bushwhack a few feet. In the warmer months, briers and other undergrowth may be thick, and there may be chiggers, etc.
The cache was put out with a log and pen, geocache statement, and a few smaller trade items for both young and older cachers.
***And the FTF went the the caching army consisting of FFSwanson, Moustcache (fomerly known as Seth&Lien), Kpenni, and . . . ?***
