Geocache Description:

A railroad that never was thrives in the
minds of local rail fans and 'train knutz'.

The Cachew Knutz are still Railroad Knutz, but, to avoid confusion with that series of 16 caches, other caches featuring railroading, like this one, will be called Train Knutz.

The Northern Neck Railroad and Power Company was supposed to provide a land link from Fredericksburg, Virginia, to this sparsely populated peninsula between the Potomac River and the Rappahannock River. The idea was born in 1920 but died the following year when too few investors bought stock to support it. Nevertheless, the railroad was eventually built, albeit in HO scale, and can be seen at the end of the Northern Neck at the Reedville Fishermen's Museum.

Here at the gateway of the Northern Neck rail fans and friends of the Dahlgren Railroad Heritage Trail have also gotten into the spirit. You will see how when you visit, and it is just there that you will find the cache.

Because of some local opposition, the trail is not yet freely open to the public and explicit permission is needed to use the trail. Fortunately, Dave Jones, president of the Friends of the Dahlgren Railroad Heritage Trail has graciously invited all geocachers to search the trail as his guest; he only asks that you be sure to let others, especially local and state government officials, know about how enjoyable the trail is and what an asset to the area it would be for it to become a public trail.
