『若山神社は、西天王山（若山）の中腹にあり、広瀬、東大寺、桜井、神内（こうない）の氏神として広く親しまれてきました。
　素盞嗚命（すさのおのみこと）をまつり、かつては西八王子社、西八王子牛頭（ごず）天王社と称しました。社伝によると、文武天皇（もんむてんのう）の時代、大宝元年（701年）に僧行基が創建したと伝えられています。また、後鳥羽上皇（ごとばじょうこう）も勅旨（ちょくし）を遣わされ、さらに楠木正成（くすのきまさしげ）も桜井で子の正行（まさつら）との別れの際に重臣を代わりに参拝させたともいわれています。
　現在でも多くの人が参拝に訪れ、春は桜、秋は紅葉の名所として知られ、境内からは三川合流地点や男山を望むことができます。

A small cache is hidden in the premises of Wakayama-jinja Shrine.

According to the Shimamoto-cho town homepage (visit link) , this shrine is situated at hillside of Nishi-ten'no-san a.k.a. Wakayama mountain and has been enshrined by local residents as a guradian god of villages of Hirose, Toudaiji, Sakurai, and Kounai. The shrine history says that the shrine was built by a famous monk Gyoki in 701 in the era of Emperor Monmu-ten'no.
At present, the shrine is visited by a lot of people because it is famous for cherry blossoms in Spring and red maple leaves in Autumn. You can also enjoy spectacular views of Sansen-gouryu (merging of three rivers --Katsura, Uji and Kizu Rivers into Yodogawa River) and Mt. Otokoyama across Yodo River.
