Geocache Description:

The Victorville Center for the Arts actually used to be the USO Building where many dances were held. Green Spot was also nearby and was well known for the many celebrities that stayed there.

The Former USO Building:

On September 12, 1941, local USO Representative, Imogene Garner Hook announced the start of a drive to raise local funds for a USO building. On October 10, 1941, President Franklin Delano Roosevelt approved $45,000 support for the project, along with a grant for 2066 workers from the Victorville Army Flying Field. Construction began in the latter part of 1941 on property purchased from the Appleton Land Water and Power Company.

In 1945 the board members of the newly formed Park and Recreation District purchased the USO Building from the federal government to use as a local recreation center. The name was changed to the Victorville Community Center.

Green Spot Inn:

One of the most successful tourist spots in Vicotrville was the Motel DeLux Green Spot. Built in 1937 by the Roy Family, the inn featured 28 hardwood floored rooms, with adjacent garages and air conditioning by ice circulated through pipes. The inn enjoyed a popularity and success equal to the namesake restaurant. A swimming pool built in the motel courtyard, added to its appeal as a desert oasis. In later years, during the motel's decline, the once sparkling pool that was part of the oasis ambiance was filled in.

A unique chapter in the Green Spot's history unfolded when former movie actress Kay Aldridge became owner of the motel. Aldridge was best known for her role as Nyoka, a capable yet frequently imperiled heroine in the 1942 movie serial "Perils of Nyoka." Not to mention the first draft of the movie Citizen Kane was written at this motel!
