The Final Leap into the next world takes me to St Mary’s Catholic Cemetery. Many of my ancestors are buried here. Someday I will be too. A lot can be learned about our past by visiting cemeteries. Galena has 4 cemeteries in town and there are many more scattered throughout JoDaviess County. Greenwood Cemetery is adjacent to St. Mary’s to the south. There are many historical figures buried there including 5 of Galena’s 9 Civil war generals. This cache is placed with permission.
It is not necessary to enter the cemetery to find the cache. There is parking along the road. That said; is there a reason for this particular spot to hide a cache? Yes, as you stand there please look over or through the fence. You will see the grave of my great, great grandfather John VanDeDrink and his wife Hendricka. My great grandfather, Harry, and great grandmother, Tina, are to their right, along with one of my great aunts, Marie. Harry's leg had its own little grave and marker. He lost it before I was born. I only ever saw him in a wheelchair. When he died the leg was placed with him. Remember to bring your own pencil.
