Geocache Description:

Almond Park

The cache has evolved over time as it has been muggled several times. There was a JJ Bean gift certificate for the First to Find. There are also key chains and other items to trade along with the log book. See below about the history of the park and why we call it "Arrow In The Tree Park" Named for Alderman Henry Elston Almond, Almond Park exudes a feeling of tranquility. The park offers a fantastic display of flowering shrubs, magnificent old trees and birds. An upper pathway winds through a shady grove, leading to the popular playground area. There are also two tennis courts available. History Opened on February 23rd, 1928, the park was originally called Dunbar Park and was constructed for the sum of $15,200. Following the amalgamation of Vancouver, the park’s name was changed to Almond in recognition of Alderman Almond’s efforts in securing the area for Public Park. We call the park "Arrow In The Tree Park" because one afternoon at the park, in 2011, there was a family enjoying the playground and just as they were about to leave, one of the boys shot an arrow from his new Nerf Arrow set, so high and far, it landed up in one of the tall trees. A resident across the street loaned the Dad a football, to use to dislodge the arrow. The Dad had a good arm; however power is not always the answer, as after a few throws both the arrow and football were firmly wedged in the upper branches. The only thing they had at their disposal was a foldable scooter. After clearing everyone back the Dad flung the scooter up at the football and arrow. After a few attempts with the scooter, the arrow was dislodged; however the scooter became stuck in the tree as well. By now a crowd had gathered watching the efforts and offering suggestions. There were discussions about the son or the Mom standing on the Dads shoulders and a great deal of concern if the scooter did get dislodged, how to get out of the way in time. Luckily, we had just been down at the beach and had our giant bubble apparatus with long dowels and rope between. I looked after the tallest guy's dog, in the crowd, while he reached with the dowels and was able to tug on the branches enough to get the football and scooter safely back down to ground level. So that is why we call Almond Park, "Arrow In The Tree Park " Enjoy the park while you are there. This is our first cache we have made. BCGA
