The Henry Goodridge designed, 120 foot tower was completed in 1827 for local resident William Beckford. Situated at the end of his pleasure gardens, stretching up from his residence in Lansdown Crescent, Beckford used the tower simply as a library and a peaceful retreat. Today the tower is owned by the Bath Preservation Trust, managed by the Beckford Tower Trust and is home to a museum collection of furniture, paintings and objects illustrating Beckford’s life.
The museum has limited public opening from Easter to October, Saturdays, Sundays and Bank Holiday Mondays, but the adjoining burial grounds are open all year round, each day from dawn to dusk. They are well worth a visit if you have the time. The grounds are deliberately left to attract wildlife and you will be treated to excellent views over the City of Bath. Both Beckford and Goodridge are buried here and there are many other interesting gravestones.
