Geocache Description:

Venturing Crew 124 placed this cache in McFarland Canyon in the rugged Mazatzal Wilderness northeast of Phoenix. The canyon can be reached via the Arizona Trail. Several trailheads in the Sunflower area provide access to side trails that lead to the Arizona Trail. Most of these trails are rough, rocky and provide little shade.

The cache is contained in a one-gallon paint can. Bring a pocketknife or multi-tool with screwdriver blade to open it. Inside you will find a Venturing Crew 124 button, camp-o-ree emblem, jump rope, jacks & ball set, folding fan, and three windmills. Be sure to seal the can. The rock on top can be used to hammer the lid tight.

Venturing Crew 124 hiked the Sunflower-Mt Peeley segment of the Arizona Trail, starting at the Mt Peeley Trailhead. To reach this TH, take Rt. 87 north from Fountain Hills about 33 miles to the exit for Sycamore Creek. Take the exit left and follow this road for 1.2 miles to an unmarked gravel road on the right. Turn right onto this road (actually the old Rt. 87) and follow 1.2 miles to the junction with FR 201. Take FR201 for 8.3 miles to its dead end at the Mt. Peeley TH. FR201 is passable in a car but high clearance vehicle with tough tires is best. Other trailheads are accessible from the valley north of Sunflower.

This is a rugged and remote area. Plan ahead and be prepared. Make sure you have maps. Water is scarce and generally present only after snow melt or rain. Be prepared for temperature extremes and sudden storms. The cache is contained in a one-gallon paint can. Bring a pocketknife or multi-tool with screwdriver blade to open it.
