Every Californian knows about Mammoth Mountain being a wonderful winter resort, maybe even people from farther away know it. But do you know where it all started? Find this cache and you will see with your own eyes what it took to ski in the Eastern Sierra back in 1938. McGee Moutain is where the very first rope tow was established. Read all about it on the plaque near the first one of this 2-cache adventure.
Within the plaque you will be able to decipher the coordinates and a waypoint for the final cache along with another rarely visited part of this abandoned piece of local California history.

The waypoint is a spot where you should leave the dirt road and head 304°NW: please don't trample the sage shrubs and other sensitive plants, weave your way through carefully as there is no path here. Long pants recommended.
Oh and don't forget to sign the log in the "marker" cache at the initial coordinates, there is room for swag and more in this one too.
The initial cache is an airtight container.

Happy caching!
You can see the original warming hut still standing on the other side of the road just North of here, and .6 miles South is McGee Creek Lodge (visit link) , completed in 1931 which accomodated the first winter enthusiasts of the Eastern Sierra. Go check it out!
If you want to learn more about McGee Mountain as a skiing area, then and now, read (visit link)
