This is the first cache on Penang island thats on 'the other side'! Its in Balik Pulau, which translates as 'the other side of the island'. Balik Pulau is the area, not really a town, and is made up of a collection of small spread out fishing and farming villages. This cache is near the kampung of Pulau Betong, by the beach, Pantai Pasir Panjang.
The area is little visited by outsiders, as the only way to get to it from the busy side of the island is over the mountains on either of only 3 roads linking it to the main side. Its between 30km and 50km from Georgetown depending on which road you take. If you've only ever spent time on the Georgetown side of the island, then this will come as quite a shock, no traffic, no big buildings, few people, and a slow rural life of sleepy fishing villages and rice fields.... in truth, the real paradise on Pulau Pinang! So what better than to have a cache here to bring you to a beautiful part of the island. It doesn't involve any long arduous hikes up high into the forests, its just off the road and next to a remote beach. The last few metres are a bit of a steep scramble to get to, depending on the route you take, which is why the terrain is rated higher than normal, even though you can park a car or bike just 20m away! Keep following the main road through Pulau Betong, and just go straight, following the signs to Kem Bina Negara. Its a terrible signal at GZ, so heres a description of how to get to the cache; you can park in the small driveway just off to the right of the road about 100m before the road ends, next to 2 small white buildings. Go round the back of the lower building, and find the slope down to the rocky part of the shore, where there is a vertical rock face on your right. If you are on the top of that, you are in the wrong place! Its not too difficult if you pick the right route. Its a beautiful spot to enjoy a walk along the beach, or fish from the rocks, and completely forget that you are on Penang and only a few kms away from hundreds of thousands of people and all that noise and chaos. But the beach, Pantai Pasir Panjang, also has a darker side, as it was the area that was hit by the Tsunami in 2004 killing several people. Please replace the cache so it is hidden from view. Container is only big enough for the log sheet, no swaps, bring your own pen, and just sign and date the sheet, you can write longer notes when you log your find here....
