This is the first in a series of caches we are placing to honor some of our favorite stories and people from American history.
Chief Logan was a Native American orator and war leader born in the Iroquois Confederacy. Although he was of the Cayuga nation, after his 1760s move to the Ohio Country, he was sometimes referred to as a Mingo. His revenge for the killing of family members by American frontiersmen helped spark the 1774 conflict known as Dunmore‘s War. Logan became famous for a speech, later known as "Logan's Lament", which he reportedly delivered after the war.
Logan’s Speech….
I appeal to any white man to say, if ever he entered Logan's cabin hungry, and he gave him not meat; if ever he came cold and naked, and he clothed him not. During the course of the last long and bloody war. Logan remained idle in his cabin, an advocate for peace. Such was my love for the whites, that my countrymen pointed as they passed, and said, Logan is the friend of the white men. I have even thought to live with you but for the injuries of one man. Col. Cresap, the last spring, in cold blood, and unprovoked, murdered all the relations of Logan, not sparing even my women and children. There runs not a drop of my blood in the veins of any living creature. This has called on me for revenge. I have sought it: I have killed many: I have fully glutted my vengeance. For my country, I rejoice at the beams of peace. But do not harbour a thought that mine is the joy of fear. Logan never felt fear. He will not turn on his heel to save his life. Who is there to mourn for Logan? Not one.
The massacre of Logan’s family took place on the banks of the Ohio river near what is present day Maysville, Kentucky. The hills through which you travel today, were once traveled by Chief Logan and his warriors as they waged their war of vengeance upon the white settlers. Perhaps, he and his warriors camped in the fields along the Little Sandy river, that you see below you across the valley? I don’t know, but maybe. There have been numerous arrowheads and other artifacts from Native American encampments found here near the river. They are probably the remnants left by hunting parties, but maybe, just maybe Chief Logan camped here too.
This is an easy park and grab, located along Kentucky 7. We like to call this stretch of highway between Grayson and the Elliot County, Lake Road. You are looking for a duct tape covered pill bottle with room for small trade items or travelers. There is the log sheet and a couple of Pathtags for the first to find. BYOP There is plenty of room to pull off the road, but be watchful of children for this is a busy highway. The cache is not located on private property, and once you arrive at GZ…you’ll know where to look.
Congratulations to Wilddawg and Mistresslyn for the First to Find!
