A serrania granítica de Idanha-a-Nova e o plano da Várzea, apresentam características geológicas e geomorfológicas completamente distintas, apresentando um contacto brusco. Os trilhos irão levar o visitante para Leste ao longo da escarpa de Falha do Ponsul.
A Falha do rio Ponsul é um importante acidente tectónico, que se estende por cerca de 85km em território português, e que se prolonga por Espanha, atingindo um comprimento total de aproximadamente 120km. Tem uma orientação geral ENE-WSW. A falha esboça a primeira subida do planalto da Meseta em direcção à Cordilheira, elevando-o da Superfície de aplanação do Alto Alentejo, a Sul, para a Plataforma de Castelo Branco, mais alta, a Norte. O rio Ponsul sai do seu desfiladeiro entalhado na superfície de Castelo Branco, bem patente na Senhora da Graça, passando a descrever meandros livres.
O castelo é hoje um miradouro de excelência, abarcando um vasto horizonte sobre a campina de Idanha até muito para além da fronteira (Superfície de aplanação do Alto Alentejo).
Este é o local indicado para fazer uma interpretação das principais estruturas geológicas da região. De salientar que o enquadramento da paisagem se faz de Sudeste para Noroeste, pelos inselberge de Monsanto (no horizonte) e de S. Gens (sobranceiro a Idanha-a-Nova, em primeiro plano).
Formação da Falha do Ponsul, a maior falha tectónica da região, com (...) Km de comprimento.
Há (...) de anos: deu-se a ruptura das rochas com um deslocamento (...), por vezes por mais de 1 Km, com deslizamento relativo do bloco esquerdo em relação ao direito - (...).
Desde há 10.000.000 de anos: a Falha do Ponsul tem vindo a ser reactivada sucessivamente com movimento vertical cavalgante, ao longo do plano de ruptura - (...), o qual é responsável pelo traçado do rio que dá nome à falha.

The Ponsul faults scarp is a important tectonic accident, which extends for about 85km in the Portuguese territory, and extending for Spain, reaching a total length of approximately (...). It has a orientation ENE-WSW. The faults scarp sketches the first ascent of the plateau towards the Meseta Cordillera toward the Andes, rising to the surface flattening of Alentejo at south, to the Platform of Castelo Branco, the highest in the north. The Ponsul river leaves is carved on the surface of Castelo Branco, well reflected in Lady of Grace - (Senhora da Graça), describing free meanders.
The castle is now an excellent viewpoint, covering a vast horizon of Idanha until well beyond the boundary (surface aplanation of High Alentejo). This is the place to make an interpretation of the region main geological structures. Please note that the environment of the landscape it's made from Southeast to Northwest, inselberge of Monsanto (on the horizon) and S. Gens destination high above Idanha, at first plan.
The Ponsul faults scarp is one of the most important active fault in all region. It is extended from Arneiro beyond the Spanish border in Termas de Monfortinho, composing an impressive topographical detachment 120 km wide. Ponsul fault is a sinistral shear zone with more than (...) years, and still today with seismic activity.
It caused a rupture in the Earth crust by (...) displacement, in some places with more than 1 Km of separation and sliding of the left block relative to the rigth one - (...).
Since 10 million years ago: Ponsul fault has been reactivated several times with vertical reverse movement along the rupture plane - (...), which is responsible for by Ponsul river drainage direction giving the name to the fault.
