Earth Day CITO in Speedway Cache In Trash Out® Event

This cache has been archived.

Scrappy T: Thanks again everybody for making my first event such a huge success. People are still talking about it. I just had a Speedway resident approach me earlier this week and asked if I was the one that got all the geocachers to help with the trails. Then she asked, "What exactly is geocaching?"

Geocache Description:

Join us on Earth Day, April 22, 2012 between 2:00 p.m. - 3:30 p.m. at the listed coordinates. This weekend marks the International Cache In Trash Out's 10th year.

CITO or Cache In Trash Out is supported by the geocaching community. For the last 10 years, geocachers around the world have been dedicated to improving and cleaning up parks, trails, and other cache-friendly places. Through these volunteer efforts, we help preserve the natural beauty of our outdoor resources!

Come celebrate CITO's 10th year by helping us clean up the trails in Speedway, Indiana. In cooperation with the Speedway Trails Association (www.speedwaytrails.org) we will be working on cleaning up trash from the trails. We will be meeting by a local grocery store. These trails wind around to I465 to the west, Eagle Creek levee to the south and east, and onto the B & O Rail Line also to the east. We will concentrate our efforts on the area from the coordinates to the west and south. In addition to cleaning the trash that has built up along this area, there may be a need for some removal of a squaters camp. The Speedway Code Enforcement Officer has confirmed that this area is not occupied. So if anyone is up to a bit more of a challenge, and if this area is still in need of a tear down, we will also try to accomplish this task.

Trash bags will be provided and distributed beginning at 1:45 p.m.. We suggest you bring gloves and grabbers if you have them. Please dress according to the weather conditions for the day and wear comfortable shoes. We will be working on trails with areas of slight bushwacking and small hills but most areas are flat an easily navigable. Full trash bags can be left on the main trail and will be picked up and discarded by volunteers.

We may be joined by Speedway Trails Members and Speedway residents who have expressed an interest in geocaching. So please extend your expertise in explaining our wonderful sport/hobby to these individuals.

Watch for an upcoming event at a local restaurant immediately following this CITO to relax, refuel and celebrate our clean up efforts.
