Geocache Description:

Located off Cedar Lake Rd in Kalarama.

This is just a plain old ordinary ammo can in the woods. Nothing fancy, nothing special. Log book, pencils, swag, FTF prize, that's about it. Nice dirt roadway up a pretty good hill to the area then a short bushwhack to the cache.
This area was once a resort for the rich people from the city. They would take the train out to the area then stay for a month or the whole summer at local boarding houses. There was also a reknowned lodge that was located near the parking area. Remnants can be seen on the right as you go up the hill. It had several owners and was known as Rocco's Villa Sunset and later the Sunset Lodge. Rocco Bunino opened it in 1920 and a few years later the airport was built in the meadow which is now Lake Susquehanna. The airport was moved to its current location a year later. Dinner cost a mere $2.25 and liquor was served. There was reputed to be an apple tree on the premises that would ooze a brandy-like substance. An old newspaper article shows that the tree was split by lightning and inside was discovered a keg of apple brandy! Nearby was a ski slope that my father often told stories about. He said he ran the lift for the skiiers. The ski slope was on the corner of Belcher and Cedar Lake Roads and either came down behind the big gray remodeled barn that is visible today or it paralleled the hill coming down Cedar Lake Road. The barn was the site of the engine that ran the rope ski lift. One hung onto the rope with their hands and got pulled up the hill.
Rocco, once the mayor of Blairstown, head of the Rotary Club, and past president of the Board of Education, was very proud of his accomplishments in creating this once beautiful place. In more recent years, the lodge was known as Woodlands West and I believe it was owned by a man named Deiffenbach. It developed a bit of a reputation and eventually closed down in the 1970s or early 80s.
On the way to the cache site you will pass the remains of an old farm house that once belonged to N.S. Smith. Be careful of the open cistern located there. The next structure is the old barn that is since long gone as well.
As I find more information on this area's interesting history, I will add it to the listing. Thanks to all for contributing info so far!
