Geocache Description:

This cache is close to the scenic path from John o'Groats to Duncansby Head.

Free parking at John o'Groats.

John o’Groats is famous as the northern end of the length of Britain route traversed by hundreds of runners, walkers, cyclists and other forms of transport each year. Going north from Land’s End in Cornwall the event is styled LEJOG and going southwards the JOGLE. Duncansby Head is the most north-easterly tip of the British mainland, although the nearby Dunnet Head is actually the furthest north spot on the mainland.

The view across the Pentland Firth to the Orkney Islands is quite stunning on clear day. The Firth is a busy shipping channel with all sizes of vessels rounding Scotland to head for Ireland, Canada and America. Because of its constricted shape the Pentland Firth has extremely strong tidal streams and careful navigation is required to pass through safely.

The Firth is famous for its tide races and this cache overlooks the famous Bores of Duncansby which appears on the flood tide and runs right from the Ness out to the island of Stroma. In the last few years an interest in exploiting the energy in the tides has become a major engineering challenge and massive developments are planned for the area in the next few years.
