This cache is the "deepest" here at the 8.4 acre Ferncroft Pond Conservation Area, and was placed to encourage enjoyment of the entire Terrapin Loop Trail. This is a nice place for taking photos, enjoying a picnic, and bird watching. The parking area is large enough for 2-3 cars. There is an observation deck and a wooden bench along the way, we’ve added them as waypoints.
This pond was once used to provide ice to the former nearby Danvers State Hospital. Hospital staff and their families also used the pond as a skating rink many winters ago. We own a cache at the old hospital site GC2T6PY, just south of here on the same side of divided Route 1. There is a high probability that any muggles you meet will be from the neighboring North Shore Community College.
This cache is a bison tube off a trail at the western side of the Terrapin Loop. The trail split is not far from the wooden bench, up a hill. After the trail crosses the same stone wall twice, commence a mild 50' bushwhack. The cache is NOT in the wall.
First-To-Find prize is an American coin rarer than our usual leave, a .900 silver “Mercury” from 1927. The obverse of this coin isn’t Mercury (or Hermes), but “Lady Liberty” wearing a winged helmet. The reverse features a fasces, an old piece of traditional imagery you don’t see much of nowadays (perhaps a good thing). (visit link) Is it squashman because of the vegetable or the racquet sport? (I have enjoyed both.) No matter, congrats on FTF!
