Can be done as a cache and dash but please do not obstruct the road. Suggest parking at the church and walk up the road Remote Devon church, narrow lanes.
St.Nectan was a fifth century monk.He was the eldest son of a Welsh king and sailed with his family to North Devon where he became revered in the Hartland area This is a rare example of a Devon church –dedicated in 1259 it is Grade 1 listed with a chancel, nave, transept, N aisle chapel and trefoil headed piscine added in the 15th century. There is a south porch and west tower which houses three bells in three quarter frames hung for chiming.(These have not been rung for so long that although the most ancient example they are decayed and probably beyond repair.) The church is decorated in perpendicular style and there are shields of the Kirkhams as the church has been in the hands of the Manor from the reign of Henry V111.There are remains of old glass in the East window The bench ends are of peculiar design with figures in the top bars and occasionally the edges –some grotesque heads without bodies but with arms also faces with tusks and projecting tongues. Interesting reredos from the twentieth century. The church is in a very rural area – narrow lanes which ever way you go –please take care. Do take a few moments to enjoy the views and if you have time walk up the church path to appreciate the surroundings. “If anybody would like to expand to this series please do, I would just ask that you could let Sadexploration know first so he can keep track of the Church numbers and names to avoid duplication. There is also a Church Micro Stats page found via the Bookmark list”
